When an individual has a desire to drink alcoholic beverages which is uncontrollable and they can’t get through the day or any relatively short period of time without taking a drink, this means that their body has a serious dependency on alcohol and the progressive disease known as alcoholism.
One of the most effective ways to treat this disease is with alcohol addiction counseling which assists the individual with detoxification of the alcohol from their system and gives them the counseling and support to overcome their addiction along with the skills to maintain their sobriety giving them a more productive and higher quality of life.
Prior to receiving actual counseling for their addiction the individual must go through the detoxification process to remove the alcohol from their system. This process causes painful withdrawal symptoms which can be moderate to severe in many cases and can include sweating profusely, vomiting, delirium tremors, hallucinations, and seizures.
The patient is monitored by experienced medical professionals who can provide such things as IV fluids, and anti-anxiety and/or seizure medications as needed. Once the detoxicification process is complete, the individual then receives counseling and group therapy to learn skills which will help them with such things as how to manage their emotions and avoid situations which can lead to temptation and relapse.
In many cases the addict will be prescribed medications in addition to the alcohol addiction counseling which will assist them in maintaining their sobriety. There are various medications that can be used such as “Antabuse” which causes a severe reaction if someone consumes alcohol similar to a hangover or withdrawal symptoms experienced when someone abruptly stops drinking alcohol.
Another drug which is also commonly prescribed is “Naltrexone” which prevents the user from feeling the effects they desire when consuming alcoholic beverages. Addicts are also encouraged to join one of the many available support group programs which are very effective in helping many people to remain sober for the rest of their lives.
